New York Wedding Photographer – Ulysses Photography Blog » artistic. unobtrusive. fashionable. fun.

We often joke with couples that we can shoot a fantabulous photo even with nothing to work with other than a broken-down brick wall – or in the case shown to the left, a corrugated wall (insert your own fantabulous selves into photo).

Don’t laugh… some of you may see this wall again! 😀

It’s true! Please don’t get me wrong – we love beautiful scenery as much as any photographer. But we’ve also found that the images that grab our couples hearts are those where the real focus is their affection and love displayed as honestly as possible, regardless of the exact choice of scenery. A beautiful location devoid of marvelous light will not make for a great photo; whereas a photographer using a less-than-desirable location with fantastic light is going to create images that will just blow you away.

That’s the way we do it, and we know you’ll love your photos for that consistent vision.

Lauren’s momNews alert!!

For all you brides who are having trouble convincing your moms to allow you to be adventurous with your dress, and all of you who are nervous about getting that gorgeous gown wet, dirty, or otherwise contaminated… Lauren’s mom (Lauren is our famous tubing bride) left this comment for us on TrashTheDress.com:

To Jenni, Ulysses, and everyone else: I took Lauren’s gown to the dry cleaners (it smelled a little fishy) and when it was completely dry they cleaned it and it came out fine!!! So….my advice to all you brides is HAVE A GREAT TIME, ENJOY LIFE AND HAVE FUN!!
Lauren’s mom,
LIZ

Lauren and Justin at Giorgio“Something old, something new” – It’s a familiar expression. The old tradition of keeping the wedding gown spotless and untouched has been with us for ages. That’s understandable, considering the expense that usually goes into making the bride look her best. But then the gown was vacuum-packed and stored in an attic, never to be seen again. What a shame, we say! However, a growing NEW tradition is causing excitement among some adventurous couples who want as much mileage out of their wedding attire as possible for something spontaneous, celebratory, liberating, fashionable, unique, and totally INCREDIBLE for their photos. We’re enthused about this, because we’ve been doing it for years with our couples!

A new website called Trash The Dress (the name alone cracks us up!) regularly hosts images from photographers around the globe who are producing some awesome images for their couples. Many of these photographers are our friends and colleagues. So you can imagine our excitement at having our images shown there, as well. Check out the story and enjoy the looks on the couples’ faces! It’s about more than simply having fun trashing the dress; you can end up with some of the most beautiful and heart-stopping images of your entire album. Some couples make a second album with this unbelievable session.

We’re so happy to have several upcoming wedding and engagement sessions like this. If you (or anyone you know) enjoy this concept for your own wedding or bridal photos — or even a photo session some weeks after the wedding — contact us ASAP, and we’d be happy to explore more ideas with you. We’ve got a ton of them! 🙂

Here are some images from one of our past “Morning After” sessions with Nicole & Mike. Click any of the thumbnails below to see larger versions. Enjoy! 🙂

  • Ulysses - HI there, Kristin! Thanks so much for the enthusiastic THUMBS UP! Believe it or not, we’re actually going to shoot another wedding for another of your workmates out there. Her name is Nicole, also! 🙂

We have such great memories of you guys and of your wedding, along with the “morning after” session. We couldn’t have been happier with the way it all worked out so beautifully. Give a warm hello and hug to your hubby for us! 🙂May 22, 2007 – 4:55 PM

  • Kristin McFarland - We also had the honor of trashing both attires in the ocean! It was well worth it and again, my dress was dry cleaned and still turned out perfect! If you are going to do a outdoor wedding . . . go all the way and do the OUTDOOR WEDDING! The memories caught in pictures are worth it!!!May 21, 2007 – 10:10 PM

  • Jenni - Hi Liz!! It’s wonderful to hear from you again! You’re the best!! You know that you’re our most famous mom, too, right? 🙂 Thank you SOOOOOO much for your comment on Trashthedress – that will be invaluable in helping dispel some of the concerns brides and moms have about keeping the dress pristine. In fact, we’ve given you your very own post above.
    Keep in touch!
    Hugs,

  • Liz Kalenowicz - HI!!!
I can’t believe how ‘famous’ my daughter and son-in-law are becoming!
I left a comment on Trashthedress letting everyone know that after bringing Lauren’s gown to the cleaners, they let it dry, cleaned it, and it came out fine!!!
What a great job you two did and continue to do!!!

Amanda & Jason e-session (01)Our weekend was a full one, and we rounded it out with an awesome engagement session with Amanda & Jason. This was actually our first time meeting them, as they had booked us long-distance some time ago. But once we got together for this perfect Spring evening, it was as if we’d known them for years. Since the sunlight would rapidly fall behind the hills along the Hudson River, we got to work immediately. The light was just perfect, exactly what we wanted for their session.

Amanda & Jason e-session (02)We talked throughout the entire session, getting to know one another better. Almost everyone feels nervous their first time working with a professional photographer, but these two were simply naturals. And that was key to their session — keeping a natural flow to things, while at the same time providing a bit of style and romance to their session. The time they invested with us was so well worth it, and we know they’re going to be thrilled by the results. 🙂

Since the Onteora Mountain House is one of our favorite venues to shoot, we’re really looking forward to their wedding. It’s going to be on a beautiful autumn day.

The complete gallery is going to be available soon. Keep your browsers pointed to the “Client Proofs” area of our main website. We hope to hear what you think by clicking on the “Comments” icon below.

Thank you so much for your wonderful comments! It was great getting to know you and Jason, and we CANNOT WAIT for your wedding day. You two are so obviously made for each other, and it makes it a joy to photograph you. We’ll see you in just a few months!!

  • Amanda & Jason - Jenni & Ulysses,

We drove away from our photo session Sunday night feeling so thrilled about our decision to have you as our wedding photographers. Without seeing a single photo, we knew we had made the best choice. You said it best in your blog- it was as if we had known you for years. The time we spent with you was like hanging out with friends. When we booked our engagement session with you, it was one of the many things on our “to do” list for the weekend. We had no idea just how much fun the session was going to be… we didn’t want to leave!

The photos you took are amazing. We are so excited about them. The emotion you captured in the photos is incredible. You have left us with full confidence that our wedding photographs are going to be beautiful. We are also so excited spend our wedding day with both of you.

    Thanks again.

    See you soon!May 8, 2007 – 8:20 PM

Okay, I’m going to sound rather dorky for a moment, but when we got a call from “Rachel and Ross” about their wedding, I was as giddy as any fanboy from their names alone! Strange, right? Names can certainly have that effect 🙂

With the springtime air ushering in a burst of greenery and flowers, we were each excited about getting together again for their e-session. And Rachel and Ross each did an excellent job, allowing us to shoot to our hearts’ content. Just as exciting was Rachel’s mention that they would be bringing their two Wheaton terriers, who are an integral part of their family. The terriers had only recently been groomed and were excited to spend some time in the open fields. 🙂

The wedding will be at the Lighthouse at Chelsea Piers in Manhattan, only a few short months away. We can’t wait.

Until then, we can’t wait for Rachel & Ross to see their complete gallery, which will be available later today in the “Client Proofs” section of our main website. If you’re enjoying the pictures, want to send a note to Rachel and Ross, or if you simply love Wheaton terriers, drop us a note via the “Comments” link below. 😀

Canvas sample 01We recently received new samples of our Canvas Wraps, and we know you’re going to love them! They truly help transform a beautiful picture into a work of art that you’ll want to display on your walls for years. The image is printed directly onto fine-textured canvas, and then the canvas is wrapped around a 1½” wood frame so that the image continues on all sides. A protective coating is applied, and these contemporary canvas photographs are ready to hang. They are available in any proof gallery under “Finish & Mounting Options”. If you need help finding them, or would like to see a sample in person, just let us know. And ask us about some really out-of-the-box ideas for even more dynamic displays using these beautiful canvas choices!

  • Ulysses - Hi there, Sheeba! It’s so good to hear from you again! 🙂

I tell you what… I will do my best to produce a picture of the Art Mount for you today. Since they are coated and are very light-weight, they are ready to hang and do not actually require a frame. All of the large Art Mount samples in our home studio are prepared in this way, and we love the contemporary look of them.

I’ll do my best to get that picture taken, and will have Jenni contact you as soon as we can. Thanks! 🙂

    We’ll be in touch again real soon.September 5, 2007 – 10:49 AM

Jesyca and Bill are truly a special couple to us. Long-time readers of our blog might easily remember this most vivacious of couples from our sessions past:

Jesyca’s maternity sessionSo, we were thrilled when they asked us to photograph Jesyca’s maternity session. We wanted to provide for them the same sort of unique and enjoyable experience they had during their previous sessions with us. Jesyca was ready with a few different changes of outfit, hair and makeup beautifully done, and ready for whatever we asked. Bill was ready, too, with plenty of behind-the-scenes humor to keep us all laughing. It wasn’t long before we had him join in with the photo shoot. We can’t wait to join them again for baby photos in a few short weeks.

Their online gallery is coming soon. Look for it in the “Client Proofs” section of our main site.

Thanks for letting us have such a fun time again, Jes & Bill!

Jesyca & Bill’s weddingJesyca and Bill got married last year, and it was a joy to photograph their wedding. Now we have again been privileged to share in another momentous time in their lives by documenting their growing family. Ulysses is about to post a preview from Jesyca’s maternity session, but I thought you also might enjoy reading the letter they sent us after the wedding. Words like these really emphasize to us how meaningful our work is…

Ulysses & Jenni,

A mere thank you does not seem to cut it. It was such a honor to have you photograph our wedding. From the first conversation on the phone, to our first meeting and then the engagement session, wedding day & the choosing of the album photographs, your relaxed professional manner made us confident that everything would be perfect.

Your discreet conduct on the day and professionalism throughout was greatly appreciated by all. You were wonderful to work with, so friendly, so unobtrusive; we loved having you as part of our wedding day.

Bill and I strongly believe that you have done the most fantastic job that we could have ever thought possible, and that also goes for all the other people that have seen the photos, as well. So many people have commented on your work, saying how stunning, unique, extraordinary, relaxed and natural our wedding photographs look. Your photographs are so rich, powerful and honest, as well as being incredibly beautiful. You are very talented artists.

Looking at our photographs, we can see and feel the whole day all over again. The love and happiness you have captured is so amazingly beautiful. Thank you for making the story of our wedding day so precious for us.

Thank you, for being such a special part of our wedding day, for your kindness, your friendship, and unique talent. Our photographs are a truly memorable gift that we will treasure forever.

Love and best wishes,
Bill & Jesyca

Today’s e-session with Melissa & Bill was as much a family session as it was a romantic interlude for their day. They are a very genuine and personable couple, and family is clearly very important to them. They brought their daughter along with them for the session. Though she was initially shy, Jacqueline’s energy and enthusiasm won out, and we had a great time with the entire family. Melissa and Bill didn’t let the cool rainy weather prevent them from displaying their feelings for one another, and neither did it prevent us from getting fantastic images for them.

Melissa and Bill, with daughter JacquelineMelissa & Bill, you guys did a really good job today, and you’re going to love the results. It’s always such a privilege to have this sort of window on a family’s love and warmth. We’re really looking foward to your wedding. 🙂

We’ll have their entire e-session gallery up very soon. You’ll find it in the “Client Proofs” section of our main website.

Kylie & Scott came all the way from Maryland for their engagement session. It was immediately apparent how excited they were to take pictures. We met at the designated place on a beautifully sunny day, and after some enjoyable conversation getting reacquainted, it was off to the races!

Kylie and Scott were true naturals in front of the camera lens, and Jenni & I had a perfect afternoon with them. They were willing to try anything we asked of them, and they often took our ideas beyond what we’d envisioned, truly making the e-session very personalized. Loved it!

We cannot wait for their wedding, as they’re going to allow us plenty of time and freedom to work with some really cool ideas for their personalized wedding session. Keep your browser bookmarked to this blog!

Click the above image to see their enthused energy as they played hopscotch together! These guys got some serious “hang time” in the air. Awesome! 😀

UPDATE: The complete gallery is now available in the “Client Proofs” section of our main website. As always, we love hearing about your favorites, so give us a shout by clicking on the “Comments” link immediately below. Enjoy! 🙂

  • Ulysses - Kylie & Scott, we had such a great time with you guys. And I’m especially glad to know that a big reason for you making this trip was to get together with us for some face and camera time. It’s SOOOOO important, and I can’t emphasize this enough. It not only helps us get to know you better, but it also makes the wedding day so much easier for you as we’ll simply be two friends there attending your wedding, with no need for you to stress over photography.

It really was an awesome session, and we can’t wait to show you the rest of the gallery. The pictures should be ready in about six weeks… I’M JUST KIDDING!! 😀

We’ll have them available very soon (ahhhh, the sweet anticipation!). Make sure you let your friends and family know about the blog, and about the upcoming gallery. I think you’ll be blown away by seeing yourselves as “celebrities” for the day. Have fun! 🙂

  • Jenni - We’re so glad you enjoyed it!! We did, too! You two were just yourselves and were so obviously having fun together, and it made you so much fun to photograph. We can’t wait for the wedding, either! I know the pictures are going to be amazing!April 22, 2007 – 6:37 PM

  • Kylie & Scott - We had such a great time taking pictures with you guys! It was so nice to know that we had made the right choice in photographers. It can be very difficult making decisions from so far away, but Saturday proved 100% that we have great photographers and will have great pictures! We can’t wait until the wedding:)April 22, 2007 – 3:24 PM

Since we have family in Vero Beach and will soon have some in Daytona, too, we’ll be starting a mailing list for anyone who may be interested in portraiture in those areas. Everyone on our list will be contacted as soon as we have our next trip planned, so that they get first choice on available time slots (and special offers!) for beach portraits or other great locations. If you would like to be added to our list, email or call us and we’ll take your information. If you know anyone in those areas, please spread the word!

It was so enjoyable to be reunited with Stephanie & Brian once again. Just look at all the fun we’ve had with them!

Stephanie’s maternity sessionSo there was no doubt that the maternity session would be just as pleasurable. The light filtering in through the windows of their baby’s room provided much of the inspiration for the shoot. After shooting a few sets, we also got to meet and play with their three-year-old boxer, Max, who was a bundle of energy that simply begged to be photographed, too. 🙂

Thanks so much, Stephanie & Brian, for being such a beautiful couple. It’s a joy to see your growing family. We can’t wait to meet Madison when she arrives!

Their online maternity session will be available very soon in the “Client Proofs” section of our main site. Simply provide your email address and password for entry (available only via Stephanie & Brian). For those that get to see the images, we’d love to hear from you about your favorites by clicking on the “Comments” link immediately below.

Mom & DadAs some of you may already know, Ulysses and I spent last week in sunny Florida visiting my family. The weather was gorgeous in the 80s, and it was nice for us to have some time off before the wedding season hits full swing. My parents took us to see some of the sights, including beautiful Sebastian Inlet, and we enjoyed a full culinary tour of Vero Beach. While we were there, Ulysses borrowed my mom’s point-and-shoot camera for an informal family photo session. Here are my parents, and my niece and nephews. Enjoy!

  • Jenni - Hi Andrea! I’m so glad you like the pictures. We do love to combine our love of family with photography. Pictures become so much more precious as time goes on. Thanks for posting!April 23, 2007 – 10:29 AM

  • Andrea - I love so much that not only do you love taking photos, as it shows, but that you love to do it with one another and with your families. It’s so important that you have it in you to be able to share your love of your career and your family all together. You are both so amazing. I love these pictures. The kids are so precious and your parents look so cute!April 23, 2007 – 7:16 AM

It might go without saying, but we’re going to say it anyway: We LOVE wedding gowns. You might think we’d become a bit jaded since we photograph them all the time. But we’re always on the lookout for something unique and different in a gown; we thrive on unique and different! We immediately start coming up with ideas on how we’re going to show off the personality of the gown in the photos.

During our recent trip to Paris – the fashion capital of the world – we were very interested to see how fashion impacts weddings, and we weren’t disappointed. As we walked the narrow streets and passed the boutique windows, we saw a lot that excited us: Fabrics, textures, laces, feathers, frills, nets, meshes… the possibilities were amazing and endless. We can’t wait to see if some of these ideas make it over to the gowns here in the States!

One of the most interesting trends lately is the inclusion of color as a design element in the bridal gown. Sometimes you’ll see color in the sash or trim. And in a bold move, some brides are actually foregoing the traditional white gown in favor of something even more eye-catching — entire gowns of soft pink, champagne, or chocolate, and even deeper colors like teal, purple, scarlet, indigo, black, etc. Amazing!! And we whole-heartedly applaud the idea!

Why are some of these trends happening? It’s simple: More and more brides are looking for ways to show their own individuality and their personalities even on a day that is usually based heavily on tradition. Some brides comment that they never want to forget the fun and beauty of their day, and they want their gown to be equally unforgettable. Others comment that they want to see less fluff and more fashion in their photos.

Top designers such as Vera Wang and others are leading the way in response to brides’ wishes for gowns that are not only beautiful, but also daring, trendy, and stunningly fashionable. Check out these fun-to-read articles and see if these choices appeal to you (cover your mother’s eyes if she’s afraid of gowns with color) 😀

So whatever your taste in gowns and/or colors, have a great time choosing your gown! And if your gown is one that you want to seriously show off in your photos, send us an email about it. Tell us WHY you love it (don’t worry, we’ll leave the surprise for the groom). 🙂 We’re going to have a BLAST photographing you, your wedding, your bridal session, and your killer gown!

We want to hear from you. Let us know what you think about your gown, gowns in general, and fashion. Click the “Comments” link below to drop us a note.

Your photos are beautiful and I know this seems kind of crazy, but that dress in your article is exactly what I want, lol. Even though this was our first time meeting Katherine and Anthony, we hit it off with them right away. We had a great time exploring the streets of a cool little town together during their e-session! Anthony said later he thought the photo session was going to be like school portraits (haha 😀 ), but these two totally let loose and just enjoyed being together. That’s what it’s all about! Please enjoy this preview below. Their entire proof gallery will be available shortly in the Client Proofs section of our website.

Our last portrait shoot yesterday was of Annie and Jason. Again, these two were such great sports in the cold. They did absolutely anything we asked, even rolling around on the ground when we found some irresistable tree roots for some striking and beautiful images. Those turned out to be some of our personal favorites from the session! Here is a preview in Infrared. Their entire gallery will be available shortly in the Client Proofs section of our website.

  • Stephanie - Ulysses & Jenni- you guys did such an amazing job! Annie, you look beautiful and the pictures of the two of you are incredible… Good luck picking out the ones that you like- it took us forever! Ulysses & Jenni were at our house yesterday and couldn’t believe how many of their pictures cover our walls. We’re running out of wall space!April 21, 2007 – 9:23 AM

  • Ulysses - Annie, believe me… you guys did all the hard work. 🙂 🙂

When Jason spontaneously asked, “Do you want me to go in there?”, THAT was when I knew the session was going to be right up your alley.

We’re so glad you like the pictures. If you need help with anything at all during the selection process, do not hesitate to call or email. Jenni is awesome with helping you figure out how to display the pictures in the best way possible or how to utilize the online shopping cart if you have any difficulty with it.

And if you have any feedback on how we can get our website or cart system to work better for you, please send it our way. 🙂

    Talk to you again soon.April 9, 2007 – 6:23 PM

  • Annie & Jason - We took a look at the amazing results and can’t thank you enough! We remember feeling silly and thinking that that was going to show through our photos- and it totally does not!! You are extremely talented!! We love each and every photo!

Oh and it is such a SMALL world- huh- Ulysses!! It is amazing how many people we have in common! I think this must be fate!!!

Thanks again for a great shoot! And such fantastic photos!!April 9, 2007 – 12:43 PM

  • Ulysses - BTW, we got SUCH a huge kick out of how many people we knew in common. We’re still laughing about it. If you know them, then we’ve probably photographed them; if we’ve photographed them, then you very likely know them. 😀

    Too funny.

We’re so appreciative of the confidence you’ve demonstrated in us. And thanks for the referrals you’ve ALREADY sent our way. A kind referral from a happy bride is absolutely the best recommendation any photographer could hope for. 🙂April 8, 2007 – 8:12 PM

  • Ulysses - Hi there, Annie! (oh… and Jason, too 😀 )

We had such a good time yesterday — as if you couldn’t tell. We really did forget about how cold it was as we were walking through the woods. And I’m glad we got to demonstrate for you the lengths we’re willing to go in order to get something that will really grab you emotionally as well as visually. We’re very happy with the way the session went, as well as your response to all the crazy things we asked you to try. Just fantastic!

    We’re looking forward to getting together again soon. 🙂April 8, 2007 – 8:08 PM

  • Annie & Jason - Hi Jenni & Ulysses!
I was driving today and felt something scratching my neck. I started pulling my scarf and guess what I found ~ a mini twig!!! We had such a great time with you both yesterday and cannot wait to see all of your creations! We were so nervous and you really knew how to make us feel comfortable (even if that meant rolling around on the ground!). We know you will make us just as comfortable on our wedding day! We look forward to seeing our “story” when you are done! Take Care!April 8, 2007 – 5:40 PM

Sarah & Ryan e-sessionWe know it’s supposed to be spring, even though right now there is actually a layer of snow on the ground. Despite the chilly weather yesterday, we had a fun and romantic session with Sarah and Ryan. They braved the cold and wind, and we just kept them nice and close for warmth, which they didn’t seem to mind at all. We now can’t wait for their June wedding at the beautiful Chateau Hathorn in Warwick, NY. Here is a preview from their session. The entire proof gallery will be available shortly on our main site under Client Proofs – stay tuned!

Ulysses and I regularly travel for seminars, as well as to find the newest and best products out there. We just returned last week from a photography trade show and convention in Las Vegas, and we thought you might enjoy hearing about it.

When we arrived, we were very excited to see our work featured prominently by two of our favorite vendors. One of our bookmakers used a photo of one of our couples in the ocean as the backdrop for the entire booth (about 10 feet wide!), and also had our album on display. Our canvas supplier also used one of our pictures to display their gorgeous canvas wraps – the photo wraps around the sides of the 1-1/2″ thick frame to create a ready-to-hang art piece. We were also excited to meet Gina Alexander in person. We were just recently accepted to carry her line of gorgeous designer handbags and wallets, and it was great to examine the bags in person and have Gina demonstrate to us their high quality features.

Besides being able to attend some great seminars, we also did some teaching while we were there. Five photographers signed up to mentor with us for 1/2 hour each, and 100% of the proceeds went to the Vision for Tomorrow Foundation, assisting children with poor vision. It was wonderful spending the week with photographers from all around the world, learning from and inspiring each other. We came back infused with ideas, refreshed and ready for a great new wedding season!

Gina Alexander: B&W CandyWe are constantly on the lookout for the very best products to offer our clients to show off their gorgeous images. Therefore, we are very excited to say that Ulysses Photography has just been selected by LA-based designer Gina Alexander to carry her handbags!

The quality of these handcrafted photo bags is outstanding. In fact, Gina Alexander bags are carried by many celebrities, including Oprah, Penelope Cruz, Halle Berry, Sharon Stone, Faith Hill, Kelly Ripa, The Black-Eyed Peas, Jennifer Lopez, Alicia Keys, Usher, Elizabeth Taylor, and Queen Latifah.

Gina Alexander: FairfaxGina Alexander also donates a portion of every handbag sold to the charity Hope for Children, committed to assisting families interested in adoption without the financial means to accomplish it (just in case you needed another reason to get one of these amazing bags!)

These beautiful designer photo bags are a perfect way to showcase your adorable children, or artistic wedding or portrait images. They would also be a very unique and appreciated gift.

Samples are coming soon, and these bags will be available shortly through our online cart. If you have questions or would like more information, please contact us by email or phone.

  • Wendy G. Johnson - Hey Ulysses and Jenni!
These bags look so cute! How did I miss these? In any case, I’m sure your clients will love them! It was great seeing you U, at WPPI and glad I could offer some help. Also, thanks for the really cool portrait of me and Ifong, my roommate out there.
