Digital Wedding Photography Secrets, by Rick SammonIt’s always a treat when other photographers recognize the amount of work and high quality we put into our photographs. Rick Sammon, one of Canon’s skilled Explorers of Light, has collected more than 200 tips from himself and other incredibly talented photographers in his new book entitled Digital Wedding Photography Secrets. He asked if he could use one of my images, along with a brief explanatory article about the photo for the chapter, “Pros Share Their Shooting Secrets”. I was excited and honored to offer whatever help I could.

Here is the image that caught his eye and the article I wrote to go along with it (you will find it on page 118 in the book):

GOT IR?

When shooting weddings, it’s always my goal to find a way to bring just an added touch of the surreal to an already unbelievable day. Sometimes that means playing with f-stops or looking for interesting angles. And other times it means using an entirely non-traditional tool to create imagery the bride & groom have never seen before. One such tool is a DSLR modified to photograph in infrared light.

Since I’m always experimenting with new gear and cameras, I had a Canon Rebel that wasn’t seeing a lot of day-to-day use. So I had it modified for IR-only photography. The resulting tool was exactly what I needed to create some of our favorite and most compelling images.

On the technical side of things, I always shoot my IR images in the RAW file format. This gives me the greatest amount of headroom for recovering blown highlights in the initial file capture. Additionally, creating and using a custom white balance for your camera will help you to more easily visualize and review your images during your photo session. I find that one of the joys of photographing in infrared is the unexpected surprises you get after pressing the shutter release button. While you generally need strong sunlight to produce optimal IR photos, break the rules now and then. Make sure you EXPERIMENT with your camera settings and shooting conditions to find something special and unique.

Of course, photography is about so much more than technical details. It’s also about emotions, feelings, and reactions. If you have a love for photography and an eye for the unusual, then you may well find yourself drawn towards an infrared romance.

Jazz Fest at Zooey & WillieZooey & Willie’s reception was incredible! Zooey is the associate director of public relations at Jazz at Lincoln Center for their orchestra in Manhattan. Her husband, Willie, is a jazz drummer in Brooklyn who has performed and recorded with great artists such as Wynton Marsalis, Herbie Hancock, Sonny Rollins, among others, and he is owner/producer of his own label, WJ3 Records. As you can imagine, their wedding reception at the amazing Tribeca Rooftop was overflowing with the sound of jazz music. In fact, Zooey said:

I hear that our reception was more like a concert which, in our case, is so appropriate. We went into our planning knowing we wanted to have a party, not just a reception. And not only did we pull it off, but you captured the spirit so perfectly! I love that you could connect with Willie II and III as they were playing together. It was a special moment for all of us.

Indeed, we knew just how special this evening was for everyone. We found ourselves mesmerized by the sheer weight of musical talent in the room. The evening was started off by Willie’s niece, Jessica, who played a beautiful piano solo; then continued by Willie II on the ivory keys. A real highlight for me personally was seeing Willie III accompany his dad on the drums for a truly dynamic and touching song. Then each of Willie’s groomsmen played to everyone’s delight. And trumpeter Wynton Marsalis (who actually grew up in a house originally owned by my late Aunt Ella Mae, literally just two doors down from where I lived in a small town in Louisiana) was there among them to lend his own sounds to the jam session. They were all musicians unified and playing on the same stage tonight for their cherished friends, Zooey & Willie.

Here’s a peek at this amazing portion of the night’s musical entertainment, led by Willie III himself on drums. Just press the PLAY button:

The results are in for the Spring 2009 contest of the International Society of Professional Wedding Photographers (ISPWP). In a field of literally hundreds of incredibly talented photographers  with some spectacular images from all around the world, we’re particularly excited that six of our images placed in the Top Ten across several different categories. Thanks go out to our amazing couples who allow us to make images like these possible.  Here are the winning entries.

When a bride tells you that she’s purchased “once in a lifetime shoes,” then you know you’re in for something special. Well, they were exactly as described, and Stefanie was stunning from head to toe, as was her entire wedding day. Following their deeply meaningful ceremony, the happy couple sat in the back of their incredible Daimler DS420 limousine, with the convertible top down, and they kissed and smiled for the entire ride from the church to the reception venue. And then began what had to be one of the most joyous gatherings of friends and family ever. The recently renovated Scarsdale Women’s Club made for a breathtakingly beautiful venue, perfectly elegant for this perfect couple.

We can’t wait to share their photos. Their entire wedding photo gallery will be available in the “Client Proofs” area of our main website as soon as Stefanie & Peter return from their honeymoon in Fiji. Until then, enjoy this sneak peek! And feel free to leave a comment below and/or click the button below to “Recommend” us to your friends.

Chic. Elegant. Stylish. Jazzy. Cool.  We could go on and on with adjectives to describe this amazing couple and their wedding in NYC. They were each full of joy as they were surrounded by the love of their family & friends, the sounds of jazz music, and the unique sort of trendiness that you find only in New York.

We are so appreciative to Maryann & Benjeil for sending this couple to us, and it was such a treat to see them again, along with their adorable little boy!

  • Ulysses - Norman, THANK YOU for your acknowledgment about that outdoors photo. I think everyone was wondering if it was worth it to go out there. It was still just a bit misty. But because I was so enthused about going out there for the unusual light, it all worked out. I wish we could have stayed longer, but the party was about to begin! So we were out and back inside in no time at all. Still, I’m so glad we did this. The one at the top of the blog is Jenni’s photo, if memory serves correctly.

We love stormy weather. You can’t get clouds like this without them. You’ll find stormy backdrops all over our site if you look around enough. 🙂

At some point, I’m going to write about the jazz jam session, which simply deserves its own entry as it was so over-the-top cool to see Willie, his dad, his niece, and his close friends all playing together for everyone’s enjoyment. I love jazz and live music, so this was a real highlight for me.

    Thanks again.May 5, 2009 – 12:33 PM

Spring is definitely heating up for everyone, not due to rising temperatures but also because of the INCREDIBLE couples we’ve had the chance to photograph!

Nicole & Andrew are one such couple that we knew we had to work with from Day One. She was already familiar with and excited about our work for a previous bride of ours, Jesyca & Bill and their growing family, so we had extra reason to feel fantastic about our experience with Nicole & Andy. In fact, our shoot with them not only lived up to but surpassed even our own anticipation. Nicole looked amazing, and Andy was in a playful mood, teasing her and getting her to laugh and smile. Their open and gentle natures blended perfectly with doses of of fun and flirtiness, making for a totally enjoyable e-session.

We can’t wait to share the photos with them! And we know their wedding & party at King’s Catering is going to be an amazing day for everyone.

More with Nicole + Andy.

  • Ulysses - I know!!! It’s going to be a blast to see everyone again, but especially the two of you. Can’t wait for our Premiere Day with you guys. You’re gonna be rock stars! I just know it. 🙂May 8, 2009 – 1:31 PM

  • Nicole - Thank you, Jessica, Jesyca, and Bill for your comments. I’m glad you like our pictures! Ulysses and Jenni are phenomenal photographers.

Ulysses, I’m glad you and Jenni had as much fun with the photo session as we did! Andy and I can’t wait for the wedding either. I’m so excited!!May 8, 2009 – 6:17 AM

  • Ulysses - Jessica, I always love when you get to visit and comment on our blog. I know how much you love romance and love displayed in a photo, so I thank you from the heart for your comments. If you get a chance, their complete gallery will be available for a few days more in the “Client Proofs” area of our main site. Look for Nicole & Andy’s Engagement. Hope you enjoy them as much as we do!May 4, 2009 – 12:49 PM

  • Ulysses - Thank you, Jesyca & Bill. They ARE amazing, aren’t they??? You’ve got the most awesome friends. 🙂May 4, 2009 – 12:47 PM

  • Ulysses - Jess, thanks so much for the encouragement you ALWAYS bring to us. (folks in case you didn’t know, Jess & Nate are one of our chief inspirations for FINALLY getting around to redecorating our studio areas… we wouldn’t have done it without them). LOVE YOU GUYS! Miss you. 🙂May 4, 2009 – 12:46 PM

  • Ulysses - Nicole, I’ve got to thank you and Andy first of all for allowing us to just PLAY with you guys. We wanted to create the perfect session for you, but you each really took the ball and ran with it. When it all comes together like this for such a sexy/cool/romantic photo shoot, I can’t ask for anything better. You and Andy are wonderful together, and we so enjoyed getting to spend that time with you. I can’t tell you what it means to me to read your comments over and over again about your joy over the photos.

Thanks for bringing your families over for the viewing session, too! With so much laughter and love in the room, it was like a mini-preview of what your wedding reception is going to be like. We’re privileged to know you all, and we’re incredibly honored that you’ve chosen us as your photographers. With all of the ultra-cool ideas we’re coming up with for your wedding day, you KNOW we can’t wait to see you guys again. Let me repeat that — WE CAN’T WAIT!!! 🙂

We just love you guys! Thanks again for the awesome words.May 4, 2009 – 12:44 PM

  • jessica - These are gorgeous!!! Love the b&w moody one….!May 1, 2009 – 2:44 PM

  • Nicole - Dear Jenni & Ulysses,

Andy and I had a really great time viewing our pictures with you last night. We couldn’t stop talking about them the whole way home. Every single one was so beautiful in its own way. We knew they were going to be awesome because we’ve seen others that you’ve done, but they were so much more than that; I don’t think there are words to explain. Actually seeing ourselves in your fascinating artwork was really an incomparable experience. We were drawn to you because of your artistic element that brings every picture to life and that makes every picture unique- whether focusing on little things or wide open spaces- and it was wonderful to be a part of it.

We had an amazing time shooting the “e-session!” Your glowing, genuine personalities made it comfortable for us to be in front of the camera. And it’s those very personalities coupled with your art that make you what you are: sensational as professionals and as friends. Thank you.

    Love,
    Nicole & AndyMay 1, 2009 – 7:28 AM

Hopefully you’ve all enjoyed seeing our fresh studio makeover.  One of my favorite parts of this rejuvenating redesign is the black & white art on canvas in our dining room.  It is particularly special because Ulysses and I spent a romantic day together at a park, somehow sharing one camera between us, with the specific goal of photographing for our dining room decor. We wanted to make it an even more special place to gather with family and friends. We wanted something naturally artful, unique, warm, and yet dramatic. We also knew these photos had to be displayed on museum-like canvas, and our fabulous canvas maker helped us see our vision through with perfect canvas wrap mountings with thick black borders. We couldn’t be more thrilled with how it all turned out.

Ulysses and I are so excited to announce that we are now making this artwork collection available for purchase on our site! It is available only on our thick canvas wrap, in black & white or brown tone.  You can find the gallery at our main website under “Client Proofs”, or you can also access it here.

If you need help with your selections, we are available for design consultation.  Just send us a photo of your room with measurements, and we’ll send you our custom recommendations on sizes and display styles.

And to assist further, we’re offering a great introductory special for the next 4 days only: 20% off any piece in the Artful Moods on Canvas gallery! So hurry over now and check out the gallery.

Spring Refresh - Canvas TriptychAfter a long tough winter, Jenni has been in “spring cleaning” mode, itching to give a complete refresh not only to our studio areas open to our clients, but also to our entire home. Her excitement was infectious, and she got me just as motivated for this spring refresh.

(Click the thumbnail above to see a larger version.)

Our goal was to find just a few of our recent favorites, and then choose display methods that would truly showcase them as pieces of loved art and decor, the exact same way you might want beautiful photos and art pieces displayed in your own home. With displays ranging from our Art Mount and very popular Canvas Wraps in various sizes, to eye-catching Collections and Triptychs, we’re each incredibly thrilled with the results! You can get an up-close look at these when you stop by for a visit. And we know you’re going to love a similar approach when you make your own photo selections. Please send us your feedback by clicking on the “COMMENTS” link at the top of this blog entry.

Here’s a look at how our spring refresh has come together in various rooms of our home studio. Just click the “PLAY” button in the box below.

  • Ulysses - I just wanted to thank everyone for their comments. I know many of you are probably redecorating new homes now or going through a studio refresh of your own. So I know that YOU know just how much thought and work this sort of thing takes. Thanks again!May 4, 2009 – 12:51 PM

What do you get when you combine an über hot couple with a yard full of wood, stone, flowing water and Humvees?  The photos below will give you a pretty good idea of the great time we had during Melissa & John’s engagement photo session. They were total naturals, and they were completely willing to be the the  clay in our hands while we got to work. We had a chance to learn about their mutual love for the outdoors, and John’s passion for collecting vintage Humvee vehicles, all of which helped us develop the perfect session for them. Keeping it real and relaxing for them was top priority. We could easily tell just how much they loved the results when they came back to our studio for the big Photo Reveal of their amazing images.

We think they did an awesome job together, and we can’t wait for their summer wedding at the Eagle’s Nest.

  • Ulysses - Hi there, Melissa & John! I think you can tell just how much fun Jenni and I had during your photo shoot, as well as how thrilled we were that the photos all exceeded everyone’s expectations. You guys have a very real and down-to-earth way about you that is refreshing to see. That’s one of the things that makes you both so much fun to photograph. • John and Melissa - We had absolutely the best time taking pictures with Jenni and Ulysses, they made us feel extremely at ease (talking and laughing with us). Its not even the wedding day yet, and already I’m bragging to my friends and family about how wonderful Jenni and Ulysses are. The pictures came out a hundred times better than we had hoped for. We were so excited to see the pictures in person and when we finally did it was very hard to pick out our favorite ones. Thank you so much for creating these wonderful memories for us. We will cherish them for the rest of our lives!

As important as florists are to every wedding, they very often stay behind the scenes, allowing the attention and focus to stay on the blooms the florist has carefully arranged for the special occasion.  So it’s not every day that we get to photograph the people who are responsible for such lovely creations! Ulysses and I had the opportunity to photograph Maryann Dawson, the owner and floral designer of Flowers on the Porch. We’ve had the privilege of working several times with Maryann, and we’re always immensely impressed with her gorgeous bouquets and floral designs, as well as her sunny disposition.

  • Ulysses - Thanks so much for your comments, Heather. Always love hearing from you. I figured you’d probably enjoy this particular post. Maryann is an amazing artist. When we asked her to put an arrangement together for this photo shoot, she made it all look so effortless. I know. I later pretended to put my own arrangement together when I got home. Needless to say, it looked nothing like hers!! I think I’ll happily stick to photography and take photos of HER arrangements instead. LOL!May 14, 2009 – 5:50 PM

  • Heather Giudice - What great pictures! Maryann looks beautiful and the colors are gorgeous. I wish I had an occasion coming up to get more flowers from her!! She is a great floral designer!!April 24, 2009 – 8:04 PM

Two of our favorite little munchkins, Arianna and Nicholas, were over for a visit yesterday. With both of them dressed for springtime, we just had to pull out the cameras to catch them at this exciting stage of their young lives. They enjoyed their time together the way babies seem to always do — grabbing one another’s noses, licking one another’s heads, and of course doing everything they could to NOT share toys. There were laughs and giggles all around the room as we all watched them with enormous delight.

  • Titi Debbie - ohhhh…so cute! Typical couple. She knows exactly what she wants and he looks confused. They are adorable!April 27, 2009 – 4:16 PM

  • jasmine piatt - Can u believe it? Arianna is almost a year old, and Nick is not far, too. These guys are going to be good friends. I am going to make so much of them. And as always, we had fun with Ulysses’ family.April 17, 2009 – 9:49 AM

And rest assured, there are several more great photos on the way! Love you guys.April 10, 2009 – 11:17 AM

  • Jennifer Bunt - Awe they are adorable…..LOL poor Nicky he was like such a sweet lil man letting the lil woman do what she would with out complaint!! They were so cute together. Can’t wait to see more of these two together.;);)April 10, 2009 – 10:51 AM

Meeting Genevieve & her mom to talk about Genevieve’s wedding was such a great experience, and we couldn’t have been happier when she told us right then and there that she wanted us for her wedding photography. The East coast met West coast when John made a special trip out from California to see her a few weeks later. It was the perfect opportunity to show photographically how a long distance relationship really can make the heart grow even fonder. We had such beautiful light, too, and Genevieve and John were a perfectly romantic couple together. We eagerly await their autumn wedding day at the amazing Tarrytown House.

We recently got the results back from the fall 2008 contest of the International Society of Professional Wedding Photographers (ISPWP). We were so busy during that time of year that we only entered 5 photos from the wedding that we were currently working on at the time, but 4 of them placed!  Here are the winning entries:

Sean at Six Weeks OldBabies are among of our absolute favorite subjects to photograph. As you might imagine, it’s even more meaningful for us when the proud parents have previously been our wedding clients. There are few things more joyous than seeing their families grow. Cory was just as beautiful and excited a mom as she was a bride a couple years ago. And she simply adores little Sean, who was so cooperative and even seemed to enjoy the camera although only six weeks old. We were amazed at how good this sharp little guy was at following us with his head and eyes. After greeting us with a warm hug, Pappa Joe joined us as soon as he arrived from work. Sean sure loves his dad! We’re so happy for this warm and loving couple.

Meridith 01month photosMeridith’s parents, Jesyca & Bill, had waited long enough for her arrival. And apparently Meridith wholeheartedly agreed, because she arrived to her welcoming family some four weeks early. She’s such a pretty bundle, and everyone who sees her falls head over heels in love with her. It’s hard to believe, but here’s yet another nearly-newborn who responded extremely well during the session, giving us plenty of expression and definitely paying attention to what was going on – at least until she got sleepy. Just perfect! We had a great time with the entire family.

My little nephews are growing faster than ever, and the youngest is speaking in completely understandable sentences! Seeing how much they change with each visit is a never-ending source of wonder. We spent a day with them at the beach – in FEBRUARY!

  • Ulysses - Jess: I know, right!?? They’re both having the time of their lives down there. And I’m glad they each love the ocean. At least SOME of the males in this family will get to know what it means to swim. LOL

It’s winter, and we’ve  had plenty of chilly days, as expected. But if not for the melting snow all around, you’d never know from the results of Zooey & Willie’s engagement photo shoot that it was actually colder than forecast. Zooey dressed in the cutest outfit that really helped show off her vibrant personality. We also really enjoyed getting to know Willie, a really cool and quietly intense guy (naturally… he’s one of the world’s leading jazz drummers). Putting them together along with our style of shooting was a lot of fun and gave us much insight into how wonderful their wedding day is going to be.

We’re  understandably “jazzed” (pun TOTALLY intended) about this gorgeous pair’s upcoming wedding and the reception at the fabulous Tribecca Rooftop in NYC. It’s going to be an amazing event, and we can’t wait!
