New York Wedding Photographer – Ulysses Photography Blog » artistic. unobtrusive. fashionable. fun.

It’s always exciting when others appreciate the honest beauty of photos of our favorite couples. We’re delighted that the team at Borrowed & Bleu has posted about some of their favorite things from Nicole + Tom’s Manhattan wedding at the Lighthouse at Chelsea Piers. This NYC couple had everything you could want for a beautiful day full of joy. Some of the visual highlights included Nicole’s handmade details, her elegantly detailed Jenny Packham dress, and more. We loved spending time with them and showing them off in photos. Hop on over to Borrowed & Bleu to check it out!

We always enjoy ourselves when visiting the waterfront in Hoboken, NJ. So it was made doubly enjoyable when we met Amanda & Aaron there to get to know them better and to enjoy a fabulous engagement photo session with them. With the Sun setting behind us, we had an insanely fun time with them as we watched NYC across the Hudson River come alive with its millions of city lights. We are more eager than ever to join them very soon for their wedding day at Maritime Parc.

They’re here!! Brandy + Paul’s much-anticipated wedding photo preview is here. 🙂 I think we spent half the day laughing with this fun-loving couple. Joy, quiet romance, almost getting stuck in an elevator, a fountain gone wild, an impromptu dance hidden behind the garden … this wedding was non-stop energy and gave us so much to photograph.

Who could ask for more than to spend an afternoon on the Hudson River, simply strolling through a nearby town with someone you love. That’s what Marcia & Michael did on this sunny Spring afternoon. And we had the chance to go along with them and share in the joy! Whether chilling together on a stoop or sharing a laugh as they watched passersby, they were an adorable couple. We’re eager to join them on their wedding day at The Garrison soon!

When we arrived at her house, Kelly was practically bouncing with anticipation. Kelly + Chris made it so easy to have fun on their wedding day, just as it should be. From the moment we arrived and began shooting until our final frame, they were completely upbeat and energized by all the love and affection surrounding them. With more than half of their guests being fellow NYPD, there was a special camaraderie that filled their day. The loud cheers said it all as they took command of the floor with great elegance and flourish during their choreographed first dance. They were sensational! Kelly + Chris: We couldn’t have asked for a more adorable couple to spend the day with, and we’re so grateful to be your photographers. 🙂

The complete gallery will be available in the “Boutique” area of our main website when Kelly + Chris return from their honeymoon. In the meantime, leave a comment below! And feel free to click the button below to “Recommend” their photos to your friends.

  • Ulysses - Hi there, Jennifer! It means the world to us to hear how much you’re enjoying all the photos! As much as we did this for Chris & Kelly, we know how much these mean to the family, too. Jenni will be in touch via email with answers to your question on ordering prints. It was great seeing you again! 🙂May 16, 2011 – 10:19 PM

  • Jennifer Ort - Hello,
    Ulysses & Jenni
As the mother of the groom I cannot tell you how amazed I am at all these beautiful photos, not only do I want Chris’ pictures I want Kelly’s too!!

Is it possible to have photos printed in regular sizes as opposed to the 5x7s or larger? I have so many pictures that are my favorites & I want to send them to family in Europe.

Thanks again for the amazing job.

Rebekah & Harry drew us immediately with their friendly and open personalities, and their deep love for photography sealed it for us. We simply had to photograph them! Their engagement photos were taken in Central Park and other portions of NYC, which was ideal for showing off not only their enjoyment of open spaces, but also their attachment to the beauty of New York City. Such a unique place for this marvelously unique and adorable couple. Inspired by Rebekah’s love of “Alice in Wonderland”, our time with them was especially fun and playful. We are so thrilled to be their photographers, and we can’t wait to join them for their autumn wedding at Onteora Mountain House.

  • Ulysses - Thank you, Jess! It was an incredibly fun session, and we had the time to simply enjoy them and have a relaxed time in and around the park. And now I have to look up UWS Alice’s Tea Cup! 😉May 11, 2011 – 12:15 PM

  • Jessica - Adorable! Please tell me that the bride has another session planned at the UWS Alice’s Tea Cup . . . you would take the CUTEST pics there . . .May 11, 2011 – 11:54 AM

We had a fabulous time with Katie & Leo. She was so excited about getting together with us that she even special ordered a pair of kitten-heeled Christian Louboutins for their session. That’s what we call taking your preparation seriously! All of that enthusiasm paid off in photos that were full of meaning for each of them. Leo, who enjoys training in the martial arts, was a gentle lion and a perfect gentleman for Katie. We’re so glad to be their photographers and can’t wait for the blend of Irish and Brazilian cultures we’ll see on their wedding day.

  • Laurie Pauline - These photos were really great! Best of luck.May 29, 2011 – 12:24 PM

  • Ulysses - Thanks, Jess! We had a chance to get a lot of different looks with them. 🙂April 26, 2011 – 10:12 PM

  • Kristin Reimer - Great work you two!! …… as always!April 26, 2011 – 6:23 PM

We love it when a couple chooses us based on an extremely strong referral from a previous client, which is how Ellen & Jason found us. And we’re so glad they did. In fact, this session was our first time meeting them in person. But establishing a strong line of communication with them early on made our photo session very relaxed and enjoyable for everyone.  Although they’d just arrived after their long flight from Oregon to NY, they were remarkably engaged with one another for a beautiful session. We’re eager for the arrival of their autumn wedding day and reception at the Old Tappan Manor.

There is little that gets us as excited as getting a call back from one of our past couples to let us know they are having a baby. And when it’s a couple that shares a long history with us, like Kimberly + Eric, our excitement is just quadrupled! We first met when Kimberly was a bridesmaid at a friend’s wedding, and since then we’ve done several photo shoots together, including Kimberly + Eric’s lovely wedding. But nothing compares to the sweet little boy we had the privilege to photograph at less than a week old. Have you ever seen a cuter face? We just fell in love, and we know you will, too. 🙂

  • Ulysses - Christine, you have no idea how much we would enjoy doing one of these for you and Dom in the future! Thanks for the very kind words. We hope to see you two again soon! 🙂April 22, 2011 – 7:04 AM

  • Christine Fiorentino - OMG, so very precious! I can’t wait till Dom and I have a little one someday.
Def can not wait for him/her to have a photo shoot with you guys.

    Love it!

Feedback from our clients is of utmost importance to us. They constantly remind us of the lasting impact on the heart of having something you can actually hold in your hands such as a remarkable album or enjoying favorite photos as art pieces on their walls. James recently sent these very kind words of appreciation, which makes our own hearts sing:

I just wanted to say we absolutely love the albums and the photo proofs. I keep looking at the photos and it takes me right back to the wedding day and the particular moment you caught. Thank you so much for doing such an amazing job!

Keri & Todd’s wedding day was a day of elegance, heightened emotions, and premium sights, beginning with Keri herself. She was an amazing bride and fabulously expressive even as she got prepared to see Todd for their private reveal before the ceremony. We could not have asked for a more perfect opportunity to capture some gorgeous photos of the two of them together. Of course, no matter where you looked at their venue, the Castle on the Hudson provided one stunning photo opp after another. We’re so glad to have been there to capture this day for them.

  • Ulysses - Keri, thank you so much for such wonderful comments! Jenni and I thoroughly enjoyed ourselves on your wedding day. You and Todd were not only perfect companions to one another, but you were also wonderful models and perfect hosts. Truly, it was a spectacular day. And we were so privileged to be able to share in it. We look forward to being there for you again as your family grows. 🙂April 22, 2011 – 7:08 AM

  • Keri Schmidt - Jenni & Ulysses,

Todd and I just got back late last night from Bora Bora and we have finally had a chance to go through all of our wedding photos. We absolutely love them and are so so happy that you were able to photograph our wedding! You guys are so amazing with what you were able to capture. Our wedding day was truly an emotional day for us on many levels and when we looked at the pictures, we felt all of those emotions again. We loved it! We can’t wait to experience many more happy occasions in our lives so that you will hopefully be able to capture them for us to share in the years to come!

    Thanks again for everything.

    Love,
    Keri & ToddApril 17, 2011 – 11:17 PM

  • Ulysses - Thank you so much, Tamieka! And thank you for all the hard work that you, Debra, and Stacey put into the day! I know it helped make things as beautiful as they turned out. You can probably tell how much we enjoyed this entire day.April 7, 2011 – 10:58 AM

  • Tamieka L. Jones - The photos are absolutely beautiful. I know Keri + Todd are going to be extremely happy with their photos.April 7, 2011 – 10:52 AM

Lauren & Philip have tied the knot! We couldn’t have asked for a more beautiful day in the month of March. And what a gorgeous bride Lauren was, wearing Pnina Tornai and the sassiest heels she could find. Phil couldn’t wait to see her! With the historical beauty of West Point, NY surrounding them and romance of the Hudson River as their backdrop, they were able to enjoy a perfect wedding day with their family and friends. We’re so glad to have been there to capture it all for them.

Their complete gallery will be available in the “Boutique” area of our main website when Lauren + Phil return from their honeymoon. We’d love to hear from you (and so would Lauren and Phil!), so please leave a comment here! And feel free to click the button below to “Recommend” their photos to your friends.

  • Ulysses - Thanks, everyone, for all the great comments. Phil was a cool groom to spend the day with, and Lauren… Oh My Goodness… just gorgeous! We had such a great time with them. Let your friends know about the little preview here, and keep those comments coming! We always enjoy reading your notes!March 30, 2011 – 7:19 PM

  • Ulysses - Lauren, we felt precisely the same way! Although I know that Phil is truly “your guy”, it was love at first sight, and you had us at ‘hello’. You had such vivaciousness, a real energy and love for life that we knew right away that we wanted to photograph your wedding! We’re so glad that you called us back that very day. We absolutely loved being with the two of you again to celebrate your amazing day! Your friends were just as much fun, too, and they helped make the entire day that much more enjoyable for us to shoot. We couldn’t be happier for you and Phil! See you when you get back from Jamaica, mon! 😀March 30, 2011 – 7:16 PM

  • Elisa - What a memorable weekend! Lauren made a beautiful bride and I am thrilled for her and Phil. I am looking forward to seeing the rest of the pictures.March 30, 2011 – 7:39 AM

  • kim molfetta - Just STUNNING!!!! Wishing my friends all the best always…xoMarch 29, 2011 – 5:49 PM

  • Lauren - I first met Jenni and Ulysses at a Thayer hotel wedding event. Right away I knew I wanted to work with them. I could see from the beginning their work was amazing and really unique. I also hit it off with them instantly. And let’s face it, if you’re spending the entire day with some folks you want to really mesh and have a great time…particularly when it’s the biggest event in your life so far.
I knew Phil was going to love them too. And he finally got to meet them when we did our engagement shoot together last year. We had a great day then and it left us with high expectations for “the big day”. They were even able to get our beloved rescue dog Penny is some great shots and that was no small feat.
Finally our wedding day came and as always, they did not disappoint. They have this really cool bond and they can communicate with each other without even saying anything! It really translates into their work and it seems to make the formals really fly by. So far I am amazed just by the highlights I have seen and I can’t wait to see the rest when we get back from the honeymoon. Jenni and Ulysses- thanks for being a part of an amazing day and for capturing it perfectly!!!

    XOXO Lauren and PhilMarch 29, 2011 – 4:13 PM

The arrival of Spring always brings joy and broad smiles to our faces, and the arrival of newborn babies in Spring has that same effect but even more so! Jamie & Paul couldn’t wait for their twins to be born. We could hardly contain ourselves when we got to meet little Lucas and Dorothea for the first time, so we can imagine the family excitement once they finally arrived. Getting two newborns to sleep at the same time can be an interesting challenge, but we pulled out every newborn ninja skill we had, and we enjoyed every minute of it. 🙂 We’re so thankful to Jamie & Paul for inviting us to continue showing through photos how wonderful a family they have! Together with their big brother, Ryan, babies Lucas & Thea are receiving a ton of well-deserved love and attention from everyone.

Feel free to leave a comment below for the happy family or for us. We always enjoy hearing from you!

Emily & P.J.’s wedding day was remarkable for us not only for the amount of creative freedom they gave us, but also for the sense of genuine warmth we were able to develop with them throughout the entire process before, during, and after their wedding day. We’re so appreciative that Emily & PJ left these very kind impressions for us:

After the guests go home, the memories of the wedding day are all that remain. If you’re lucky, the memories are crystallized in your photographs. This is why it is so essential to have photographers who capture the raw emotion and beauty of the day- Ulysses and Jenni “see” what others don’t see. They find interesting aspects of the venue that make the pictures special, they capture the exchange of emotion that is expressed between people and they shoot the in-between moments that you might miss in the flurry of the day.

For me, the choice was clear the moment I saw their photos of a friend’s wedding. Booking with Ulysses and Jenni was one of the best decisions I made for my wedding. They are artistic and the photography is beautiful. They blend into the backdrop; you don’t even remember they are there, yet they don’t miss a thing! I didn’t give a second thought to how the pictures would come out- I knew they would be everything I wanted and they were!

Not only are their photographs amazing, Ulysses and Jenni are wonderful people, hard-workers, and consummate professionals. Many of my guests remarked on the talent and grace of our photographers. Ulysses and Jenni create real relationships with their clients that last beyond the wedding day. My husband and I consider them friends and we are already planning on having them document other milestones in our lives.

Keri & Todd love wine. In fact, the very day they got engaged, they’d visited a winery. So it was a perfect fit to take their engagement photos at a lovely local winery. The rich scents of wine and oak added to the romantic flare of our session. We loved showing them just how enjoyable a session like this could be, and they were just as excited with the results as we were! We can’t wait to join them for their wedding day at the magnificent Castle on the Hudson.

  • Ulysses - Hi there, Mark! It’s really great to hear from you. Thanks for the very kind words. I know our couple will be just as excited to read them as we are. 🙂March 15, 2011 – 7:12 PM

  • Mark - Nice images, U guys.March 15, 2011 – 7:03 PM

Sora &  Alex enjoyed an marvelously genuine day of love and joy, and it was a true highlight for us to be a part of it. Sora was kind enough to provide a review of their impressions after receiving their finished wedding album:

Your search is over! I’m serious! Ulysses and Jenni are an awesome husband and wife photography duo and you wouldn’t be disappointed! They are both friendly and charming like you have known them all your life, but professional. There is an aura around them that just puts you to ease.

Ulysses and Jenni are not photographers who are in your face to get the great shot. They are the complete opposite. They maintain a certain distance to respect your wedding ceremony and reception – which is great because you almost forget that photos are being taken and that allows you to just enjoy your wedding day without worrying about the photographers. Don’t get me wrong – they definitely get all the shots that you need. Since you aren’t always aware they are taking photos so when you get the photos – it is an absolute pleasure flipping through them. The excitement over the photos will never end!!!! My husband is still raving about the photos and not just about the moment of the photo but the overall look, composition, and lighting of the photos! My mother loves Ulysses because he was the only photographer who was able to capture the correct color of her traditional dress!

Jenni is the administrator that not only takes photos but will help you order photos, get the wedding day timeline just right, respond to emails really quickly and she is just always present to answer any questions or nervousness you may have about the photos!

My husband and I didn’t want an ordinary photography company to take photos and we were in the search for a single photographer with a point of view and style – Ulysses is it!!!! Some may find the cost to be higher than ordinary photography companies, however, you can’t put a price on the memories that Ulysses was able to capture. I swear you will enjoy them for a lifetime and it is worth it! Wedding photography is an investment!!!

I hope to be able to use them again in the future!

Brandy & Paul are quite simply made for one another. You can see it when they smile at each other, the way they joke together, and especially when you see them in photos. We and our couples often seem to draw observers during our sessions. During the early part of our shoot at a scenic location, a passerby asked if we’d like to see an even better place for photos. She invited us to follow her vehicle to an incredibly beautiful lookout with a panoramic view of the Delaware River valley, definitely worth the trip up a treacherously steep and icy path up the mountain! We were delighted to see Brandy & Paul’s playful nature come through during our session. We’re even more excited for their upcoming wedding at the lovely Catlin Gardens. It’ll be here before they know it!

  • Kalyn Stark - I am so excited that I get to share this amazing day with you! The pictures are beautiful and I know you’re going to be a gorgeous bride!March 3, 2011 – 11:15 PM

After being one of the first people to see her during her first week of life, we didn’t think Liliana could be any more precious. Clearly we greatly underestimated her power of cuteness! Now at six months old, she’s become even cuter and more impossibly adorable than we could have imagined! In fact, it was difficult taking photos of her because we just wanted to play with her all day long. She loves to sing to you, dance with you, and just gaze at you with big beautiful dark brown eyes. Her parents lavish her with love, and she grinningly accepts all of it. We can hardly wait until our next session with her.

If you’re enjoying these, feel free to leave a comment below, and don’t forget to click the button to “recommend” to your friends!

Preston Bailey is widely known for his rich artistic sense and ability to transform virtually any existing space into a place where dreams truly become reality. With his experience and broad knowledge of the wedding and event industry, he’s certainly a voice to pay attention to. Preston recently wrote a blog article with which we whole-heartedly agree. Whether you’re a couple looking for wedding vendors, or a wedding professional yourself, you’ll be interested in reading what he has to say:

I have gotten a lot of bad feedback from the industry for being so strongly against the issue of paying commissions without our client’s knowledge.

I just wanted to explain once more how less than 10 years ago, I almost went out of business. Mostly because of this horrible practice of giving away 10 to 20% commissions to certain planners and vendors (among other issues).

I still think this is our industry’s “dirty little secret” no one wants to address, and I for one am not going to keep quiet about it.

I’ll try to list below the many reasons I think this system should be stopped:

  • I don’t care how you look at it. If your clients are not aware you are doing this, you are being very shady and borderline illegal.
  • You are not being fair to your clients if you only choose vendors that agree to pay you commission. Your choice of vendors should be based on their talent and skill, not their ability to give you a quick kickback.
  • This practice is giving too much power to some planners and vendors.
  • If you pay this commission, as I did, in the long run you will lose lots of profit. Here’s a simple example: You charge $25 for your services and $25 for materials, so your cost is $50. In order to make a decent profit, you bill your client $100. If you Pay $15 (15% of $100) for commission, your profit that should have been $50 dollars turns out to be only $35. In other words, you just paid 30% of your profit in commission.
  • The only other way you could possibly make money while paying commission, is by cutting back your product. The clients get less flowers, food, etc. in order for you to meet your margin.

I have absolutely no issues with this if your clients agree that commission is your method of payment. If not, it’s time to stop stealing. What’s your opinion?

Nail on the head, Preston! We’re proud to say that Ulysses Photography has never paid nor accepted commissions for assignments. We feel this is neither a meaningful referral nor is it honest on the part of either vendor. Our clients deserve better than that. The more educated we all are about this sort of thing, the healthier we all are for it. At Ulysses Photography we’re very grateful for each of the talented professionals with whom we work as business partners.

  • Ulysses - Thank you, Aida! Feel free to link to this post on your own blog or Facebook, too! A referral list is fine, as long as we’re not talking a PAID referral list. We love working with and recommending great PEOPLE, and the vendors that recommend us feel the same way. Not only are we winners in this, but so are our clients!March 23, 2012 – 4:40 PM

  • Aida Krgin - AMEN. I’m so glad to know that I’m not the only one who feels this way. Thank you so much for sharing your view/opinion on this. I also believe, very strongly, that clients should choose vendors based on their talent and skill to produce a great product and not because they are the vendor on the list.March 23, 2012 – 4:28 PM

  • Ulysses - Thanks so much for weighing in, Maryann! For those that maintain this sort of standard like yourself, it only means the very best experiences will come to our clients, as well as for our businesses.March 16, 2011 – 9:30 PM

  • Maryann Dawson - I feel exactly the same way! I have a great amount of respect & admiration for the people in HIGH Places that feel the same way about this very sad practice.
