Jessica & Stephen’s Wedding

Despite the heat wave this past weekend, Jessica & Stephen had the most beautiful wedding at The Eagle’s Nest. Jessica was full of tears of joy and excitement as she spent the morning preparing herself with her friends and bridesmaids. When ready, Jessica looked amazing. She nervously walked out to the shady hill where Stephen was waiting to see his bride-to-be for the first time that day. It was the most tender moment imaginable, and you could tell that they felt truly complete again. The rest of their day couldn’t have gone more smoothly.

Ospreys on Long Island!

Our most recent wedding took us out to the beautiful North Fork of Long Island. Following the wedding, we stayed overnight at the refreshing Stirling House Bed & Breakfast. On our drive back upstate, Jenni pointed towards some trees a couple hundred yards away and said, “Is that a hawk?!?” I just barely caught a glimpse of the raptor in the trees, but I knew even from a distance that it was rather large for a hawk. So we turned the car around to get a closer look.

Since our camera gear was in the trunk, she got out my long lens, and I tried to focus as quickly as I could for a closer look. Sure enough, it wasn’t a hawk at all - it was an osprey (also called a sea eagle in some regions). Long Island is rather known for the springtime return of osprey pair, who raise their chicks before migrating south again. Sometimes they’ll winter as far as South America. Check out this site for more information on Long Island ospreys.

Here are some photos of our feathered friend. In one frame, you can even see the osprey’s mate sitting in the nest. My guess is that they’re either brooding with a few eggs in the nest or else protecting some hatchlings. We love bird watching, and this is our first time actually seeing an osprey in the wild. They’re beautiful creatures! :)

Florida Mailing Lists

Since we have family in Vero Beach and will soon have some in Daytona, too, we’ll be starting a mailing list for anyone who may be interested in portraiture in those areas. Everyone on our list will be contacted as soon as we have our next trip planned, so that they get first choice on available time slots (and special offers!) for beach portraits or other great locations. If you would like to be added to our list, email or call us and we’ll take your information. If you know anyone in those areas, please spread the word!

Our Visit to Vero Beach

Mom & DadAs some of you may already know, Ulysses and I spent last week in sunny Florida visiting my family. The weather was gorgeous in the 80s, and it was nice for us to have some time off before the wedding season hits full swing. My parents took us to see some of the sights, including beautiful Sebastian Inlet, and we enjoyed a full culinary tour of Vero Beach. While we were there, Ulysses borrowed my mom’s point-and-shoot camera for an informal family photo session. Here are my parents, and my niece and nephews. Enjoy!

Trade Show and Convention

Ulysses and I regularly travel for seminars, as well as to find the newest and best products out there. We just returned last week from a photography trade show and convention in Las Vegas, and we thought you might enjoy hearing about it.

When we arrived, we were very excited to see our work featured prominently by two of our favorite vendors. One of our bookmakers used a photo of one of our couples in the ocean as the backdrop for the entire booth (about 10 feet wide!), and also had our album on display. Our canvas supplier also used one of our pictures to display their gorgeous canvas wraps - the photo wraps around the sides of the 1-1/2″ thick frame to create a ready-to-hang art piece. We were also excited to meet Gina Alexander in person. We were just recently accepted to carry her line of gorgeous designer handbags and wallets, and it was great to examine the bags in person and have Gina demonstrate to us their high quality features.

Besides being able to attend some great seminars, we also did some teaching while we were there. Five photographers signed up to mentor with us for 1/2 hour each, and 100% of the proceeds went to the Vision for Tomorrow Foundation, assisting children with poor vision. It was wonderful spending the week with photographers from all around the world, learning from and inspiring each other. We came back infused with ideas, refreshed and ready for a great new wedding season!

We’re taking a limited number of sessions, so contact us ASAP for more information and an appointment! This offer is extended to Florida residents, as well as anyone visiting Florida for a little fun in the sun. We look forward to seeing you there!

A Day In Paris - 10

One of our favorite things to do in Paris was “sample” the variety of foods and tasty dishes. This was an exciting adventure in itself because half the time the menus were written completely in French, with no English translation (!!!). So occasionally, we’d get something that was nothing like what we expected, considering our very poor French. But the food was always of excellent quality as to taste and presentation.

Our traveling partners, Melissa & René Tirado (also incredible photographers) were Jerry’s other models during our trip, and we loved spending time with them. So here in the final image for our tour of Paris, we found ourselves sitting outside a popular café, and clearly having a blast as we think about our incredible experiences.

We can’t say enough about how much we loved being in Paris. I know we’ll return one day soon, and MAYBE we’ll even photograph some of our awesome brides there! Wouldn’t that be amazing!?? Dream large when it comes to your photography! And make it happen!

We’d like to thank ALL of you for looking and sharing your comments. Keep your browsers bookmarked to this blog. There will be more great images and information coming soon. Please keep your comments coming. We truly enjoy the interactivity that this blog allows. Knowing what you love about the pictures helps us to do what we love so much, too.

Especially would we like to give a shout out to Jerry, Ryan, and Sally, our Australian friends; David Beckstead of Washington; and the Melissa & René in Boston (love you guys!). Without you none of these incredible images would have been possible. Let’s do it again sometime soon! :-D

A Day In Paris - 9

This one wasn’t actually shot in Paris. But I just had to include it in the line-up because we really enjoyed meeting a variety of warm and enthusiastic photographers while in Europe. We had a chance to help Jerry out with his workshops, and two of our favorites attending the class were Berty Greenbough and Laetitia Perrot, who together form the team of Perrot Photography. Each of them share a similar energy and enthusiasm for photography that Jenni and I do, so we couldn’t help but be drawn to their work.

During the shooting portion of the class, this image was taken by Berty. We had fantastic morning light, and he used it to best advantage by creating this very cool and dramatic interplay of shadow and sunshine.

The hat!

Keep those comments coming! We’re going to continue to respond to as many as we can, too. We’re really enjoying the feedback, as it helps inspire us for your own photos. Stay tuned! Our blog returns to Paris tomorrow!! :)

A Day In Paris - 8

Walking and teasing near the base of the Eiffel Tower. We decided to get a closer look at the Eiffel Tower. On its northern side is the bridge crossing the Seine River leading back to the Trocodéro, and on its southern side is a long narrow park of grass and walkways lined by benches and trees. This park is where we now found ourselves.

Although it wasn’t as green on this January day as it would be during the summer, it was unseasonably warm (for January in Paris), and a walk by the Eiffel Tower was a perfect opportunity to enjoy the panoramic views, as well as enjoy one another. We saw plenty of other couples like this, in love and in their own private world.

A Day In Paris - 7

Love near the Eiffel Tower. While we usually avoided the major tourist traps in Paris, how could we resist spending at least a little time at the Eiffel Tower? We walked across the bridge that leads from the Trocodéro to the Eiffel Tower. Once we got there, it was only then that we appreciated how truly massive this structure really is. Though it is made of steel and covered in thousands of bulbs to light it up at night, it is undeniably beautiful even in broad daylight.

Swept up in the joy of being there near the Tower, we couldn’t help but get closer for this movie poster-like photo. I love the almost “epic” feel of it, another story captured in a single moment.

A Day In Paris - 6

Immediately across the Seine River from the Eiffel Tower sits the beautiful park of The Trocodéro, which is also the site of the Palais de Chaillot. Many thousands gather each day to enjoy the grand views of the commemorative structures, the peaceful greenery of the park, or to gaze upwards at the Eiffel Tower which lords over this portion of Paris.

For this fashion session, we chose to make ourselves as indigenous as possible and do as the Parisians do: Sit on a bench and enjoy watching the tourists and sight-seers pass by. Of course, to make this work, you must strike the pose that we have here! :-D

All of a sudden we (the models and Jerry the photographer) became one of the sights that the tourists were gawking at. It was actually a lot of fun, turning a photo session into a surreal but utterly enjoyable experience. We absolutely loved it. :)

A Day In Paris - 5

Dancing down by the Seine River“I feel good!” or perhaps “You make me feel like dancin’!” or I could go with “Dancin’ Machine!” However we choose to title this one, it just makes me laugh every time I look at this photo. :)

We were still walking by the Seine River, and Jerry asked me to “Dance!!” I don’t know if it was just the wind or the fact that I didn’t comprehend his *extremely* simple request (hahah!). He shouted again above the wind, “I need you to dance your heart out!” So I started to improvise as best as I could. Let me tell you, I never felt so silly, but the results in the pictures made me look like a dancin’ genius! Jenni was off-camera and laughing hysterically, but that’s okay. My best moves are yet to be seen! :-D

Please, keep the comments flowing. We’re really enjoying your feedback on these photos. We’re always excited about bringing this same sense of freedom, fun, and creativity to your own pictures!

A Day In Paris - 4

A walk down the Seine RiverFrench couisine is everything that you’ve heard it would be — flavorful, filling, and beautifully presented. In fact, one of the most enjoyable features of Paris was checking out the various cafes and dining experiences. Yumm! Never feeling at all rushed, we were able to enjoy our meals at our leisure, and sit for long conversations while watching the rest of Paris pass by our windows.

After a delicious meal, what could be more lovely than an evening walk to the Seine River? When we got there, what a view we had! — expansive palaces, parks, the Eiffel Tower with its rotating beam of light, and other landmarks, all marvelously lit to show off their art and architecture. This photo was taken by international traveler and award winning photographer, David Beckstead, whose loose and relaxed style was perfectly suited to this slow romantic stroll down the river.

A Day In Paris - 3

There is a dark underground tunnel giving pedestrians access to the base of the Arc de Triomphe. This tunnel served as the location for our next fashion session. The concrete texture of the walls provided texture, and the low lighting provided a sense of mystery.

I love the look of longing in Jenni’s green eyes, juxtaposed against my mostly hidden features in this image. A sense of the luxury of times gone by is conveyed by her fur stole as well as the black hat. What is she supposed to be thinking here? And where am I going? That’s the fun of it, and I love making up stories in my own mind when it comes to images like this. Sometimes during our engagement sessions or our brides’ fashion sessions, we’ll ask you to pose a certain way perhaps because we’re “creating a story” with your pictures.

Make up your own story about this photo and share it with us by leaving a comment! :)

A Day In Paris - 2

Paris has the well-deserved reputation of being the “city of love”. Nearly everywhere we walked, we saw couples holding hands, touching affectionately, or kissing. We don’t know what it is, exactly, but there’s definitely something about this city that takes hold of you and sweeps you away in its romantic embrace.

You would never imagine a long climb to the top of the Arc De Triomphe as the place for a fashion shoot, but it proved to be just perfect in setting the desired mood of isolation and privacy while the staircase itself seemed to wind into infinity. Of course, holding and kissing Jenni has never been a problem, making this session an ideal reward for climbing all 284 steps to the top of the monument. :)

A Day In Paris - 1

Many of our readers know that we were excited to take a trip to London and Paris in January. The trip was part vacation and part work-related. During our time in Paris, we had the unique privilege of being photographed by multi-award winning photographer, Jerry Ghionis from Australia, who had asked us and our traveling companions, René & Melissa Tirado (also wedding photographers), to model for his European workshops. What an amazing opportunity to be inspired while being photographed, and the whole time taking in the wonders of Paris!

For the next week or so, we’re going to share with you one picture per day from our fashion shoot in Paris. These took place over the course of two very intense but completely enjoyable days of shooting. Hopefully these images will give you not only an idea of the passion and romance that can be found in this incredible city, but also convey just how stylishly playful great photography can be.

We’d definitely love to hear your comments on the photos. So please click on the “Comments” icon immediately below this entry, and give us a shout! :)

Our first photo was taken on a fifth-story corner balcony of our hotel. It was very windy and quite chilly out there, but we were so excited about this start to our sessions that it really didn’t matter. As I gazed out towards the Arc de Triomphe, the wind provided a bit of movement to Jenni’s hair and fur stole. Jerry asked us to adopt a little attitude, ignoring and yet feeling drawn to one another at the same time.

Have Wedding… Will Travel!

Having recently returned from a trip to Europe, we’ve definitely got the bug for travel! It’s a good thing we’re photographers because often we find that travel is simply part of the joy of what we do. Our couples agree: Those that commission us are also willing to expend themselves just a little bit to travel to our studio, where they can see our incredible album samples, large wall prints, and enjoy some relaxed conversation as we begin building our relationship with them from the very moment we invite them in. The results in the photos are so worth that first meeting together. For those who don’t have the option of meeting us in person, we’re happy to take care of your needs via phone and email.

Whether your wedding is on the North Fork of Long Island, out in the middle of Pennsylvania, in the beautiful region of Saratoga Springs or the Finger Lakes region in upstate NY, or in the Boston and New England area, we’re happy to join you to shoot your wedding! The variety of places we go
definitely bring local flavor to your experience and to the pictures.

We’ve often joked that the farthest we’ll travel is Australia. And it’s true! So if you have some truly spectacular plans for your wedding, but think that it’s too distant for us to travel… or for you to meet us… think again. You won’t find anyone else as happy to be there with you to shoot your wedding.

Its your wedding. It’s our planet. Let’s take beautiful pictures together. :)

We’ve Been Away; We’re Back!

Those of you who read this blog regularly know that Jenni and I have been through some difficult times recently. But besides the incredibly supportive friends that we’ve had around us to lift us up and support us, we’ve had some beautiful couples that have delighted us with their warmth and fun personalities, allowing us to create gorgeous images for their weddings and their engagement sessions. What a tremendous boost you guys have been for us! More on that in another post….

We kicked off our 2007 year with a trip to Europe, one that we’ve been wanting to take for a long long time, and it turned out to be no better time for it — we went to London and Paris, and finished up by attending a photography workshop with our close friend and multiple award-winning wedding photographer from Australia, Jerry Ghionis, in the town of Manchester, UK.

We’re brimming with images and ideas after this incredibly inspiring trip. More than a vacation, it was a chance to just sit back and breathe and reflect and to also look forward. We can’t wait to tell you more about it.

For now, we still have a lot of unpacking and organization to take care of. But we’ll be in touch real soon with some images and experiences from the trip. Thanks to all of you for waiting for some new stuff from us! Drop us a note by clicking on the “Comments” link immediately below. :-)

My Parents’ 50th Anniversary

Even though I’ve been in New York for many years, in many ways I’m still a southern boy at heart. My parents raised me, my brother, and my three sisters in an area just west of New Orleans. I’ve been back to visit on occasion, but this visit was different. It was to celebrate with my parents their 50th wedding anniversary.

The celebration was a bit belated partly due to Hurricane Katrina, which obviously changed the lives of everyone living in the Gulf region, and which put a temporary hold on our travel plans. The other reason was that three of us “kids” are now married and scattered across the continent with families of our own. It took a lot of coordination to bring everyone to get together for this occasion, but we were finally able to do it. In fact, one of my sisters and her husband surprised my parents by driving from an assignment in Mexico, so that we could all be together.

My mom and dad got married at an early age… dad was an athelete of 18, and my mom was an advanced school student of 16. They moved in with my mom’s parents, who already had a large family. There was minimal electricity in the house, not enough room, and other conveniences were at a premium. But my mom’s parents loved their new son in-law, and he helped expand the house. Since he knew some electrical work (learned from his own dad), he helped rewire their home and bring their place into the 20th century.

Clearly, my mom and dad didn’t always have things easy. But they stuck together even though they were only kids who hardly knew anything about life. As each new baby was born to them, they learned a lot more about life than they expected. And through it all, they gave so much back to us — a good work ethic, an honest concern for others, a sense of spirituality and who we are as people, and a desire to always do the best we could with whatever was given in to our hands at any point in our lives. We’ve each done that. And now some 50 years later, even though my dad has been through strokes and a broken hip, and my mom has suffered severe health issues of her own, I think my parents are perhaps more deeply happy than ever.

For this occasion we were all together again, along with our mates. My brother and his wife brought their two sons, the youngest one meeting his grandparents for the first time and who has the name “Ulysses” as his middle name (my father is also named Ulysses… I’m a “Jr.”). My mom cooked meals for us that I haven’t tasted in years. Mmm-mmm-MMMM!!! And we stayed up late talking about what they’d been through together, and how they were able to help their community post-Katrina. And sometimes, as families do, we all just talked about nothing at all. It was awesome. I appreciated every minute of it.

Here’s something else that struck me: My parents in many respects are the same two people today that they were when the top image in this blog was taken. The same two kids. Maybe that ought to be so obvious. But as a photographer today, I can now see the young kids inside of them that I never really knew when I was a kid myself living under their roof. That’s family. That’s love. And that’s what it meant to me to go home. I have so much to be thankful for, when it comes to my parents and family.

Jenni and I have a lot to be thankful for as wedding photographers. We know that what we do for others will only grow in value over time.
