Vacation Time!

Ulysses and I will be taking a vacation and will be out of the office from November 28 through December 10.  We may be checking email occasionally during that time as we’re able, but we greatly appreciate your patience if you don’t hear from us until after the 11th.

If you are wondering if we’re available for your wedding date: Please click this link to go to our main site and fill out the contact form, and you will receive an immediate automated response that will let you know.  We will then contact you as soon as possible to give you further details.

We’ll have plenty to share when we return, so stay tuned! :)

Additional Note: Our web host has informed us they’ll be doing maintenance on our site’s server on the day we’re leaving. They do not anticipate any problems with our website, ordering system, or blog. However, let us know if you notice any problems, and we’ll try to address them if at all possible. At worst, we’ll take care of any problems when we return. Thanks again for your patience.

Makeup, NY Pro Style!

The month of October has been an incredibly busy but really enjoyable month. In the middle of all of the activity, Ulysses and I had a chance to visit with Rosemarie, owner and lead stylist of NY Prostyle. She is a professional beauty stylist for over 15 years, who has worked directly with celebrity hairstylist Frederic Fekkai. She specializes in both makeup and hair designs. Her artistry has been featured on television programs including The Oprah Winfrey Show and Live With Regis & Kelly.

It was very timely that Rosemarie kindly offered a makeup application session and gave me some new ideas to try, since we were going to be attending a wedding the following day (as guests!). I was happy to experience her airbrushing technique, as I’d never tried it myself. Rosemarie is just delightful, and I’m sure her friendly and easygoing nature would help de-stress any bride. Here are some photos from our enjoyable time together:

We’ll See You at Chateau Hathorn!

Ulysses and I will be attending the Chateau Hathorn Bridal Show in Warwick, NY, this Sunday, 9/7/08, from 12:30-3:00pm. We’d love for you to join us!  If you haven’t yet been to the Chateau Hathorn, either for dinner, for one of their incredible wine tasting events, or to check it out for your upcoming wedding, you are seriously missing out.  The Chateau Hathorn is definitely one of our favorite places - there simply hasn’t been anything we’ve eaten there that we haven’t LOVED.  And the people couldn’t be friendlier!  The Zueger family runs the Chateau with warmth and total enthusiasm for what they do.

If you come on Sunday, you’ll have the opportunity to walk the beautiful grounds and enjoy the old world elegance of the building (they are a bed & breakfast, too!), sample hors d’oeuvres and wedding cake, and speak to several local vendors.  And of course, please visit us!  Ulysses and I will be there to chat and talk about your upcoming wedding.  We look forward to seeing you!

Happy Anniversary to Us!!!!!

Sometimes it’s hard to believe, but Jenni and I are celebrating our 19th anniversary of marriage! We can honestly say that as the years have rolled by, we’ve come to appreciate one another ever more. And that appreciation has led to an even deeper love and devotion. The way we look at it, 19 years isn’t really so much time when what you really want to do is spend an eternity together. Still, we can offer the following little tips that have helped us:

  1. Give your marriage everything you’ve got. It’s worth every bit of the time and energy you put into your union.
  2. Make sure you show and tell one another OFTEN how much you love one another.
  3. A successful marriage requires two great forgivers.

Trust me, the few short & sweet points above will keep you working at it for years. Let us know how things are going for you!

For those waiting to see previews from recent weddings, many thanks for your patience. We’ll be back soon with lots to share. But today I’m going to spend a bit of time with my honey on our anniversary day.  :)

Best of Westchester Party 2008

One of our favorite areas to work and play in all of New York is the Westchester region. Some of the area’s most fabulous and creative professionals are found there. Each year Westchester Magazine throws a gala party so attendees can experience over 100 of the very “BEST” in Westchester County. This year’s event was simply spectacular. It was held at the Glen Island Harbour Club in New Rochelle, NY, with an expected attendance of around 3,000 individuals.

When everyone arrived by car or by shuttle, they were greeted by a red carpet entrance, which we photographed, and welcomed by “Jessica Simpson” look-alike Lynsey to enjoy themselves for the evening. When they entered the VIP tent and clubhouse there was plenty of food to sample from the finest restaurants, the most awesome bands and DJs to be heard in the area, relaxing massage treatments from the best Westchester spas, intriguing products from store owners, and the best services available from a variety of businesses. It was an event not to be missed, and we’re thankful to Westchester Magazine for inviting us to photograph it!

Head over to the “Client Proofs” section of our main website, where the entire gallery of “Best of Westchester Party 2008″ photos are NOW AVAILABLE - maybe you’ll even find YOURSELF in those photos! Or visit Westchestermagazine.com, where they also have the party photos for your enjoyment.

Lost a Friend Yesterday

We lost a dear friend in death yesterday. Bernard was 79, but had the heart and spirit of a much younger person. Jenni and I shared some of his last moments with him in the hospital as his body simply gave out on him. He is survived by his wife, Lillian who has just as much love for life and a deep sense of spirituality as Bernard did, as well as several children who love him. He’ll truly be missed by all who know him.

Although we’ve been out of the office for the past couple of days, we’ll be back soon with updates on the latest weddings, e-sessions, and portraits. Thank you for your patience.

Wine Tasting and Dining at a Lovely B&B

Welcome to the Chateau HathornChateau Hathorn, a lovely venue in Warwick, NY, recently invited us to photograph one of their premium events, a wine tasting dinner. As it’s one of our favorite places to dine and spend time, we were more than happy to take photos for them. The Chateau Hathorn also offers a full bed & breakfast service, so we photographed the rooms for their upcoming revamped website. We can’t wait to see how the new site turns out for them.

We watched the smiling guests arrive, and then all were all shown to their tables so the program could begin. What followed was the most enjoyable six-course meal you could imagine. Sandra’s excellent preparation and attention to detail was clearly demonstrated throughout the evening. This particular tasting was Chilean-themed, so she had researched Chilean food and wine, and then owner/chef Dolph prepared an authentic Chilean feast. Each course brought huge smiles of delight to our faces as we enjoyed the incredible tastes and aromas, and as we followed Sandra’s instructions on how to properly sample the wine.

In-between courses, we’d continue photographing the event. So here are a few photos for our readers to enjoy some of the evening along with us:

A huge thanks and congratulations goes out to Sandra for such a successful evening. And to Helene & Dolph, we are truly privileged to know and work with you. It was an amazing evening at the Chateau. Fine food, excellent wine, first-rate service, beautiful scenery, and great conversation all contributed to a memorable evening. To find out about future wine tasting dinner events, be sure to contact Chateau Hathorn and ask to be placed on their mailing list.

Tornado Coverage By One of Our Grooms!

Adam found himself literally in a front row seat while an unusually large and fierce tornado suddenly struck a community in Colorado.

While watching the incredible images of this story unfold on news sites such as MSNBC.com and CNN.com, I realized that I actually KNEW this reporter! He is one of our grooms from the 2007 wedding season! It was just AMAZING to see him in his element and in such an important role in helping his community by reporting and keeping us all up-to-date on how families there were affected by this event. We’re glad to see him so involved and active there and wish the best for him and his wife, Jill.

Our thoughts and wishes for safety go out to all those who suffered damage or worse from the tornado.

ISPWP Invites Ulysses Photography

ISPWPRecently we were invited and accepted as members of the ISPWP (International Society of Professional Wedding Photographers). We couldn’t be happier about it! For a number of reasons, organizations like this are important for you to know about.

We have always encouraged the thought that you should not compromise when it comes to your choice of photography style, beautiful images, or the customer service you receive. After the wedding day, your wedding album becomes your first family heirloom. Excellent photography only increases in value over the years. So we know that while choosing a photographer can be overwhelming, you deserve a photographer that will give you confidence in your selection.

The ISPWP was formed by professional photographers with the following goals in mind:

  • Promote and showcase the talents of their members
  • Provide a resource for clients to find the best photographers in the business
  • Maintain high standards of membership in the areas of experience, professionalism, quality, integrity and customer service
  • Collaborate and share ideas to push the industry forward

Many of the members are personal friends and colleagues of ours, so we are very proud to be counted in their number. Make sure you check out this excellent and easy-to-use site. Enjoy the images and the inspiration there. And then give us a call! We’d love to talk about how our photography can add to the joy of your wedding experience.

Proud to “Style Me Pretty”!

Style Me Pretty logo

There are lots of bridal blogs out there. But I have to say that one of the most impressive and stylishly-created resources available for brides is the Style Me Pretty site. When I first saw it, I was so excited to see their depth of coverage on various topics like choosing your color palette, unique fashion and presentation, how-to ideas, paper goods, inspiration boards, and so many other areas related to your wedding. Another great feature is their Little Black Book, an exlusive “one-stop source for the best wedding vendors in your city.” Ulysses and I are especially honored and totally excited to have been selected for inclusion in their short list of photographers for the Lower Hudson Valley of New York.

Little Black Book blurbThe Style Me Pretty site is also listed in Martha’s Circle, which is Martha Stewart’s own short list of favorite blogs to visit. If you’re looking for some of the very best photographers, vendors, or inspiration for your wedding, Style Me Pretty is definitely the place to visit! Keep them bookmarked in your browser or news reader.

Bloomingdale’s Wedding Party a Hit!

We recently enjoyed attending the Bloomingdale’s White Plains Pre-Wedding Wedding Party. And it was a big hit with brides who attended! Everyone loved the incredible food from Doral Arrowwood (they gave us the most adorable mini take-home cakes!), the gorgeous flowers from Westchester Floral Decorators, music by Craig Scott Entertainment, and chatting with fabulous wedding consultant Debra Thompson. There was even a professional model, Natalia, showing off beautiful fashions throughout the evening, with no fewer than three changes of clothing. We had the opportunity to speak to several wonderful Westchester couples planning their weddings in our area as well as destination weddings.

What a fabulous opportunity it was for couples to enjoy a night of cocktails, talk to vendors hand-chosen by Bloomingdale’s, and then take advantage of their gift registry at the same time! A sincere thank-you to Meryl Lefkowitz for inviting us, and to Debra Thompson for recommending us.

We were stationed right in front of a table setting I fell in love with, so I know exactly what would be going on my registry - you’ll see me with it in the last photo of this set:

The Pre-Wedding Wedding Party at Bloomie’s!

Bloomie’s logo

Exciting news: Ulysses Photography has been selected to be the exclusive photographer at Bloomingdale’s “Pre-Wedding” Wedding Party this Friday night in White Plains! Come join the fun at what they call The (Very) Social Registry.

There will be cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, music and wedding vendors to meet. Debra Thompson, one of our favorite wedding planners, will be speaking about how to plan your perfect wedding. If that’s not enough, you can meet the Editor in Chief of Modern Bride Magazine, Antonia Van der Meer, and get a signed copy of her new book, “The Modern Bride’s Survival Guide”. Think of it as partying with a purpose.

The event is this Friday, March 14 from 6-8 pm at Bloomingdale’s White Plains. To say, “I do”, please reply to 914.684.6363, and let them know we sent you.

We’ll see you there!

Hair & Fashion Show UPDATE!

We’ve Been Tagged!

And now for a bit of fun. We’ve been tagged by some of our favorite photographers on their blogs: The Bebbs, Tamara Lackey, Paul Johnson, and Teddi Maull. That means we’re supposed to list 8 facts that most people don’t know about us on our blog, and then tag 8 other photographers, who then have to do the same thing. Sounds like fun, right? So here we go. I’ll go first:

Jenni:

  1. I’m a health food nut. I could live on organic Fuji apples dipped in Skippy creamy peanut butter, with organic skim milk. I don’t eat everything organic, but some things definitely taste better, and apples and milk are two of them. I also love oatmeal made from steel cut oats. If you think you don’t like oatmeal but haven’t tried the steel cut, you must.
  2. I love mornings. I am totally a morning person. I could literally jump out of bed in the morning. I love that quiet time before the phone starts ringing, and I get so much done.
  3. As a kid I took ballet, jazz, tap, Tae Kwon Do, gymnastics, and piano. I loved all of it.
  4. Growing up, we had every kind of pet: Fish, gerbils, ducks, rabbits, dogs, cats, birds, and even those sea monkey things, but no, we didn’t live on a farm. However, we did once live across the street from cows and horses.
  5. I once trained some wild chickadees to eat out of my hand. They would actually call me from inside the house, and greet me when I came home. They all had different personalities, so we really got to know them individually. One was very nervous, and would always grab a seed and fly off so quickly that she would drop it. Another was very social, and would just hang out on my hand for a while before taking a seed. Another was greedy, and would always try to grab two and wind up dropping them both as it was flying off. I walked around with sunflower seeds in my pockets all the time.
  6. I’m passionate about fitness. I take spin, Pilates and strength training and have a personal trainer. Exercise is my happy pill and gives me tons of energy. I even work out before shooting a wedding. My sneakers and Ipod go with me everywhere when I’m traveling.
  7. One of my very favorite things to do is walk on the beach with Ulysses.
  8. I love essential oils. Synthetic fragrance gives me a headache, so I discovered essential oils. They’re so wonderful for so many things, and so much fun to play with. I make my own cleaning supplies with them, and scent my rooms with them.

Ulysses:

  1. I love music. All sorts of music. At an early age, I was more interested in the harmonic and melodic relationships between the notes and sounds I was hearing than who the music was actually created by. So, I was sometimes the odd man out when everyone else wanted to listen to R&B or pop (although I liked these as well) while I may have been more interested in Beethoven and Rimsky-Korsakov. I even taught myself to play the piano to a degree. I wrote and sang a song for Jenni on our wedding day.
  2. I’m a huge astronomy nut. In fact, I wanted to go to school for astronomy. My life took a different turn, but I’ve always maintained my love for the stars. One of the most moving astronomical events was seeing the aurora borealis for the first time during a solar storm so powerful that the Northern Lights were visible from my area of NY, a very rare occurrence! Footnote: One of Jenni’s first anniversary gifts to me was something I still hold dear — a big red Newtonian reflector telescope. You could say she gave me the gift of astronomy again.
  3. Spanish food. Love it! Rice, beans, enchiladas, sopopillas, and almost anything else. My latest obsession is sofrito for flavoring (thanks to a beautiful friend who made us a large batch large to last the entire winter!). I put it on everything, breakfast, lunch and dinner! YUMM!
  4. I never had a pet of my own while growing up. But Jenni wants me to mention that I had a “pet” jumping spider; I maintain she was NOT a pet. She had no name, and I wasn’t emotionally attached to her. I did find her… fascinating. I’ve always been interested in the natural sciences and unusual creatures, and spiders are about as interesting as you can get in the world of tiny creatures. Jumping spiders would almost convince you they had some degree of intelligence. Like I said, she was NOT a pet. But I’ll admit it was a happy day when she spun an egg sack after I found her a “boyfriend”. Don’t ask.
  5. I’m a huge fan of the old Star Trek series. And Shatner! No one does it like William Shatner. His legendary acting abilities are so over-the-top that it’s a thing of beauty to watch him take charge in a scene. Hilarity aside, the lofty goals of that show are similar to those of many who harbor a positive view of the future.
  6. I’m from LA. But not *that* LA. I actually mean Louisiana. That’s right, the southern home of New Orleans, jazz, and Cajun cooking.
  7. I think I was about 20 years old when I rode my first roller coaster, while visiting Disneyland with some friends who wanted to ride Space Mountain. After proudly telling a few other friends of my accomplishment, several told me Space Mountain didn’t qualify as a roller coaster. I’ve neither found a new roller coaster to ride, nor have I been on Space Mountain again.
  8. I’ve read a ton of books by Edgar Rice Burroughs, author of the Tarzan books. If you’ve only seen movies and cartoons, do yourself a favor and go find the ORIGINAL Tarzan books and check them out. They don’t write them like this anymore. And for bonus points, read Burroughs’ “John Carter of Mars” series of books.

So that’s it! More than you ever wanted to know, right? :) Now I get to tag 8 others:

Hair & Fashion Show!

Fashion & Hair Affair (Westchester Magazine, #003)Jenni and I were invited by Westchester Magazine to photograph a fashion show at the brand new Ritz-Carlton, Westchester, in White Plains, NY. What a fabulous venue! With the emphasis on the latest in fashion and hair styling, there was an electric buzz in the air at this sold-out show as the 400+ attendees enjoyed the conversation, music, and hors d’oevres, and were even treated to a belly dancer’s performance.

Fashion & Hair Affair (Westchester Magazine, #045)Then it was time for the runway fashion show. It began with some of the upcoming season’s designs that will be seen at Neiman Marcus, and the show continued with some of the latest in hair and makeup by some of Westchester’s best salons. Since we had the chance to photograph several of these salon teams in the recent past, it was exciting to see them again before the show, and to see their models strutting their stuff on the runway.

Here’s a look at some of the evening’s events, hair, and clothing. Just turn up your speakers, and click the “PLAY” button to enjoy the show.

A huge thanks goes out to Aimee and Meke and to Westchester Magazine. It was amazing to see how they and their team pulled this gala event together. We met some wonderful people, and Jenni and I were thrilled to have been invited.

Announcing our new Portrait Gallery!

Portrait GalleryWe’ve recently made an addition to our website, and we wanted to share it with all of you. Although we still specialize primarily in weddings, we’ve been getting more and more portrait requests from our past wedding clients. They’ve been calling us back as their families begin to expand for maternity and baby portraits (which thrills us!) , or when their whole family is in town to get some special family portraits. We love continuing our relationship with them and seeing them again!

To reflect the direction our photography has been taking us, we decided to add a “Portrait” Gallery to our main site. We filled it with a few of our favorites to give you an idea of the kind of portraiture we love, and we think you’ll enjoy them as much as we do. Check it out, and please let others know who might enjoy our style of photography. If you’re a past wedding client, we really hope to see you again soon!

Our Autumn Season

AutumnAs many of you have noticed, we’ve been extremely busy lately. In fact, it’s just going to get busier as we head into our autumn season. We’ll have lots of exciting weddings, morning-after sessions, portrait sessions, and even a honeymoon to show you soon on the blog! :)

Since we feel that excellent service is just as important as incredible photographs, we will be closing out the months of September and October to any additional portrait sessions except for maternity and newborn (since they are obviously time-sensitive).

We are currently booking portrait sessions for the months of November and December, so if you are thinking of planning a session, please call us now to reserve a date.

Thank you all! We’re looking forward to an amazing autumn.
